THEME: Expanding the Definition of International Studies
The term “International Studies” literally defines our organization. Indeed, international studies have been the primary response of many academic communities of how to understand better the challenges of a rapidly changing world. As a course of study, it is a field of inquiry drawing upon multiple disciplines and perspectives. These may include anthropology, business, communication, economics, geography, health care, history, languages, literature, politics, religion, sociology, and countless others, for no single discipline has a monopoly on how best to understand the forces which shape our world. Relationships between these different disciplines are often hard to manage, but the changing nature of the international system and our ability to understand it requires us to look at the world through these multiple lenses.

But is it enough to say that we are “interdisciplinary” and simply leave it at that? Moreover, are we REALLY engaging in the sort of interdisciplinary approaches that we claim to be doing? While we may argue that the subject matter of international studies is much more than governments sitting around a table and discussing issues of war and peace, just how often do we move beyond such subjects – and how easily do we incorporate other disciplines -- in our research and in our classrooms? In short, what exactly DO we mean when we discuss what we have long-termed “international studies”? The 2007 ISA-South Conference will consciously provide a forum for wrestling with such questions.
